Saranac Lake Grace Pantry
Grace Pantry provides household and personal care items as well as pet food for community members in need at no cost. This includes personal care products (shampoo, dental supplies, soap, deodorant…), baby care(diapers and wipes), cleaning products( laundry detergent, dish deterrent, cleaning supplies) and paper product( toilet paper and paper towels). These items are not eligible for purchase using SNAP food stamps. No other organization in Saranac Lake provides this service.
Grace Pantry, which operates with 20 volunteers, is open every Wednesday except on major holidays and very inclement weather conditions from 3:00-4:30 in the Baldwin House on Church Street, connected to St Lukes Episcopal Church. Besides Saranac Lake, families from Tupper Lake, Lake Placid, Bloomingdale, Vermontville and Gabriels have utilized Grace Pantry.
The monthly expenses for supplies at Grace Pantry average $600. As prices continue to increase, items like laundry detergent, diapers and shampoo are accounting for the greatest expense to Grace Pantry. On a weekly average 100% of people utilizing Grace Pantry need cleaning supplies and 30% need diapers and/or adult hygiene products.
To have items on hand needed by families, Grace Pantry purchases items weekly from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and locally from the Dollar Tree, Aldis, Dollar General, Kinney Drugs, and the Family Dollar in Lake Placid. Community members and faith groups continue to make product donations and monetary donations. Grace Pantry relies on these donations and actively applies for grants every year from the Carpenter Foundation, Charles R Wood Foundation, Cloudsplitter Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Saranac Lake.
